Can Visitors Find There Way?

Striking a balance between meeting your business goals and retaining the attention of your sites visitors is essential for a successful site.

If your target audience is made up of one group with similar preferences and needs, the job becomes far easier.

If not, your site has to start by appealing to all before gently aiming different groups into areas of your site that will maintain their interest and broadcast the message they will respond to. At the same time, your sites purpose has to be achieved, even if this clashes with your visitors primary needs.

Valued content

Visitors to your site will have a short attention span, subsequently, forcing content that meets your needs but not theirs is a mistake. Your audience will rarely be happy to just hear about your company, they need to be fed with the information they value. Whilst your main selling points may be enough to captivate their attention, care should be exercised to meet their needs. Proving just enough value for free to maintain their interest.

All this effort needs to be displayed in uncluttered pages that download quickly.

Evaluating your sites usability
  • Does your site confuse visitors with too many links?
  • Can all your visitors understand your links and your industry specific terms (terminology)?
  • Does your site have separate areas to accommodate your visitors different needs and the message they will react to?
  • Does your site use images to underpin its navigation and message?
  • Does your site have up to date information and do all links work?
  • Are there customer expectations that are being missed, leaving visitors disappointed?
What to do next

As a likely expert in your field, putting yourself in the mindset of your target audience is difficult. Often, carrying out a few test evaluations with a portion of your current clientele will unearth any problems. Asking them to find information they would be likely to seek, and seeing their efforts, will help.

Whilst asking them to view your site for a few moments, will establish what initial message they get on first impressions.
